Committee on Health and Social Affairs (H&SA)
The Committee on Health and Social Affairs addresses the fundamental well-being of Kosraean citizens, encompassing both the physical health of the population and the social support systems that sustain community welfare across the state.
Healthcare oversight forms a central pillar of the committee’s responsibilities. The committee reviews and deliberates on legislation affecting public health services, medical facilities, healthcare workforce development, and disease prevention programs. This includes examining policies related to primary care delivery, specialist services, medical equipment and supplies, and public health initiatives addressing issues such as non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, and communicable disease control. Given Kosrae’s remote island location, the committee plays a crucial role in ensuring adequate healthcare infrastructure and addressing the unique challenges of delivering medical services in a Pacific island context.
The social affairs component of the committee’s mandate focuses on programs and services that support community well-being and assist vulnerable populations. This encompasses legislation related to social welfare assistance, elderly care, disability services, youth programs, family support services, and community development initiatives. The committee examines measures designed to strengthen social safety nets, promote community cohesion, and ensure that all Kosraeans have access to essential support systems.
The committee serves as advocate and guardian for the health and social welfare of the Kosraean population, working to ensure that legislative measures provide adequate resources for healthcare delivery, support vulnerable community members, and promote overall population health and social well-being. Through its oversight, the committee helps build resilient communities where all citizens have opportunities to lead healthy, dignified lives.
