How you can get involved

Discover how you can take part in Pohnpei's democratic process — contacting your member, attending sessions in Kolonia, providing testimony at committee hearings, and engaging with your State government from any of the municipalities or outer islands.

The Pohnpei State Legislature represents you, and your participation strengthens our democracy. Whether you live in Kitti, Kolonia, Madolenihmw, Nett, Sokehs, U, or one of Pohnpei’s outer island communities, there are many ways to engage with the legislative process and make your voice heard on issues that matter to your community.

The most direct way to get involved is contacting the member who represents your area. All members welcome input from their constituents and want to hear your concerns, ideas, and perspectives on proposed legislation. You can call, email, or visit their offices during regular business hours. Contact information for every member is available in the Members section of this website.

Attending legislative sessions allows you to see democracy in action. All sessions are open to the public and held at the Legislature building in Kolonia, and the session calendar is posted on this website. Watching debates and votes helps you understand how decisions are made and which members support positions aligned with your values.

Committee hearings offer opportunities to provide direct input on specific bills. Committees often invite public testimony, allowing citizens to share their expertise, experiences, or concerns about proposed legislation. Notice of committee hearings is posted in advance, and you can contact the Chief Clerk’s Office to learn how to sign up to testify.

You can also submit written comments on pending legislation. If you cannot travel to Kolonia in person — especially for those living in the outer islands — written submissions ensure your views are part of the official record. Contact the Chief Clerk’s Office for guidance on submitting comments for specific bills.

Staying informed is essential to effective participation. This website provides access to current bills, session schedules, member contact information, and news about legislative activities. Following the Legislature’s work helps you identify issues where your input could make a difference.

Whether you’re passionate about a specific issue or simply want to be a more engaged citizen, your participation matters. The Legislature serves the people of Pohnpei, and your voice helps shape the laws and policies that govern our State.
